A Mississippi native, is a globally recognized African centered Political Ecologist, Africana Studies scholar-activist, International Affairs and Public Policy, Health and Organizational Development expert. Committed to ending global inequality and oppression, Afia has worked for over 20 years in communities and researched Black/Africana thought and experiences in the US, Brazil and in 22 African countries. Her Pan African activism, lectures and scholarship challenge dominant knowledges produced about African people and culture.
A Fulbright Specialist Scholar, Afia has held executive positions, and developed, managed, evaluated and/or consulted on programs and projects on national and global scales. She was Sr. Fellow (Water) Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., in Washington, DC, Country Director-WaterAid Ghana, an Assistant Professor -Africana Studies (Morris Brown College, Atlanta, GA), and a visiting teacher at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and Cape Coast University, Ghana. She holds a doctorate in Political Science from Clark Atlanta University (’97). Recent publications include “The Sankofa Movement, Re-Envisioning African Liberation And Answering Our Ancestors: Ron Walters And The Long-View Genealogies Of African Culture, Intellectual Work And Activism (with Nana Kobina Nketsia V), March 2021 Journal for the Center of Policy Analysis and Research, CBCF, and a co-edited book The Legacy of John Henrik Clarke (2021, 2nd edition, AHSA). She is on several boards, including the international board of the Pan African Heritage Museum, and is the former Vice-President & President of the African Heritage Studies Association, a member of ASALAH, the Association of African American Museums (AAAM), NCBS, the Council of Independent Black Institutions, NCOBRA, Black Sustainability Network, Black Philanthropy Network, and The Schomburg Center, among others.
