About Us

THE 'RETURN' ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

RETURN TO OUR ROOTS SPECIAL HYBRID EVENT

"Reflections on Wakanda Forever, The Woman King, and Descendant movies "

Friday, November 18, 2022
6-8:30 PM Central / 7-9:30 PM Eastern

Join host the Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation, along with the Guardians of Heritage, Africatown Souvenirs, LLCs, and the Mobile International Festival for a critical discussion of the movies: The Woman King, Wakanda Forever, and Descendant.  Descendant is the recent documentary about the founders and their progeny of historic Africatown, a former free town established in 1866 after the Civil War near Mobile Bay in the United States.  Founded by 32 of 110 Africans kidnapped, enslaved and violently carried on the slave ship Clotilda from the coast of Ouidah, present day Benin, AfricaTown is now incorporated into Mobile, Alabama.  Today the plight of the descendants reflects over 160 years of systematic neglect, economic marginalization, racism and a host of human social, and environmental injustice issues.  The roundtable discussion will feature top Africana Studies, African centered Education and Black Psychology scholars, descendants of the founders of AfricaTown, Benin historical and cultural experts, and individuals involved in the reclamation of the Clotilda.  Participants will be able to respond to the speakers both virtually and in-person as we explore questions of identity, roots, reparations, unity and how to support AfricaTown.

Confirmed Speakers/Participants include:  Joycelyn Davis, Kamau Sadiki, Chief Jason Lewis, Dr. Joyce King, Nana Segu Karakh (Tony Browder), Dr. Wade Ifágbemì Sàngódáre Nobles, Dr. Afia Zakiya, Akosude Kougniazonde, Joe Womack and others!
