Executive Director, Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation

Position Description:

The Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation (AHPF) invites candidates to apply for its first Executive Director. This position is funded with support from the National Trust for Historic Preservation African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.  Reporting to the AHPF Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership in the revitalization and preservation of historical Africatown.  The Executive Director will play a significant role in the development of an engaged and energetic board and demonstrate experience in building a coalition among different organizations and/or people and uniting their unique missions and interests in pursuit of cementing the cultural, educational, environmental, and economic prosperity of Africatown.  Included in this coalition are Africatown descendants and residents as well as supportive organizations locally and around the globe.  

Minimum Qualifications-Education and Skills

For consideration by the search committee, the candidate must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred.  Degrees in the following or related fields are preferred: Museum Studies, Community Development, Business Management, Business Administration, African-American Studies; Organizational Development; Non-Profit Management; History/Historic Preservation, Library Science, Law, Hospitality/Tourism.  Exceptional candidates with 10 or more years of relevant experience and without a bachelor’s degree are encouraged to apply.

The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint ,and expert communication skills as a writer and speaker across a variety of media platforms and audiences.  Skills using project management software and data visualization are preferred.

Expected Job Responsibilities

For consideration by the committee, the candidate must demonstrate five or more years of professional experience and achievement in most of the following areas:

  • Fundraising, grant development and grant management
  • Management of multiple projects or programs each with their own partners, timelines, and deadlines
  • Organizational administration (finance, compliance and human resources):
  • Oversight of digital, print, web, and social media communications
  • Board development and management
  • Strategic planning and assessment
  • Familiarity with the concept of the Black diaspora and specifically African-American history and culture

To qualify for this position, the successful candidate must have or be able to obtain a passport, must have a driver’s license, be able to work evenings and weekends, as needed, and pass a background check.
